Tell Your Lawmakers You Support the Arts
On My Way to Making a Postcard
for "A Book About Death"
I Wrote...

Text Messages from the Dead

I walked in the door and while I’m not sure if my heart skipped a beat my breath certainly was knocked out of me. I knew his mania was back. I had held that breath for six years and I just let go.

He sat there: fingers bloodied by the wire mesh and the snake pit of wires he was using to produce a cross-stitch. A sampler like you would see in someone’s kitchen with the words “The way to a friends house is never far,” or some such homily. I looked around and saw dismantled lamps, an electric guitar devoid of strings and an antique radio stripped for the wires.

“Hi ya, what are you up to today?” I ask. It won’t do to be upset because as bad as the manic stage is, the depression to follow will be worse by far. He hardly looks up as he replies that he is receiving text messages from the dead. The why of destroying so many possessions to transpose these ‘messages’ into the garish metal cross-stitch artwork seems of no great importance. I look over his shoulder and am at least relieved that he is cross-stitching words and not gibberish. Simple statements; short, to the point as if the dead don’t have unlimited cell plans.

He attributes “Why did you talk about me?” to Paul. Dead almost thirty years in an auto accident; but then Paul was prone to paranoid delusions when his meds weren’t right. Ellen, gone even longer, asks: “What happened to my video?”

I say as gently as I can muster that perhaps someone is playing a bad prank, but he is dismissive as he says “Who but the sender would know these specific things?”

“No one else but you dear.” I think to myself as I move to the kitchen to make us some tea and toast. I need time to ponder what to do as this cycle begins; it will pass in three days or three years.

I blow over the top of my cup and I tell him that many of these messages are from people who died before text messaging began. “All things in Heaven,” he replies as he works to pull another word to completion.

I look over my back for the toast to pop as he says “Sorry, I’m using the heating coils for Steve’s message; remember, he committed suicide.” I’m reluctant to ask but I do, “What does Steve have to say after all this time?”

He says, “Wish you were here.”

Of course he does, Steve always had a sardonic sense of humor.
