Tree's comment is perfect, lovely. The grimace on the death mask (?) is so ...familiar. At first it frightened me, but taking a second look, I feel compassion for it.

laura - your observation is a perfect thing to contemplate. The Mayan rulers were ruthless- warfare was their purpose in life. Artists and artisans were spoils of war. A life of slavery, yet you continue your craft. Much to consider.

I hadn't thought/known about the artisans being spoils of war! How much their creations say about the necessities and compulsions of being human. Perhaps though they were compelled to produce, these slave artisans were able to find integrity in their art-making. It would be a comfort to think so, even to a cynic like me!
